NSE President Receives 2017 SPE Council
The President of the great and honourable the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Otis Anyaeji, FNSE, FAEng today played host to members of the 2017 SPE Nigeria Council.
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), led by Dr. Saka Matemilola, 2017 SPE Nigeria Council Chairman, accompanied by members of SPE Council, notably Engr. Thomas Abolarin, FNSE, was on a familiarization/Courtesy Visit on the President NSE.
Dr. Matemilola called for collaboration between NSE and SPE in the area of engineering conferencing to develop contents that deal on petroleum engineering.
He also affirmed that SPE is open to working closely with NSE in establishing an institution of petroleum engineering.
The President, in his response, warmly welcomed the 2017 SPE Council, affirming the Society's commitment to expanding the frontiers of knowledge, which has given rise to already 24 divisions of the Society with a couple of study groups. The President intimated members of 2017 SPE Council that the Society has over time developed a keen interest in Petroleum engineering, given the economic impact and strategic position of the hydrocarbon industry to the Nigerian economy.
The President was joined in the meeting by Engr. TSG Wudil, FNSE (Vice President, Engineering Bureau Services), Engr. Halimat Adediran, MNSE, Engr. Garba Yakubu, FNSE, Engr. Chinyere N.Igwegbe, MNSE (Exco Members) and Engr. Sola Obadimu, MNSE, FIoD (Executive Secretary)
The Institute of Polymer Engineers (IPE) has just conferred on the President with the prestigious status as Fellow of the Institute.
This conferment, which made Mr. President the first Fellow of IPE, was given in recognition of his contributions to polymer engineering and pioneering efforts in championing and getting Council to approve the establishment of the Institute.
It is instructive to note that the first division the President joined was the Institute of Plastics Engineering, UK. And ever since, the President has developed a soft spot for polymer engineering not just because of its industrial impacts but also environmental effects.
The President, in his vote of thanks, challenged the Institute to work towards proper disposal and utilization of plastics, which are indiscriminately dumped in our water ways.
He also urged the IPE to be interested with how Eleme and Warri polypropylene plants are faring, in terms of sourcing for raw materials or by-products for production to sustain its functionality.
Congratulations, Mr. President.
In line with the cashless policy of Nigeria through the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Society has taken steps to transform its financial operations to go cashless, deepen accountability and transparency. The course which was anchored by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) held today, Monday, February 27, 2017 at the NEC headquarters, Abuja.

SPEECH BY PRESIDENT OF
THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF ENGINEERS,
AT THE SOCIETY’S 2017 FIRST SPECIAL DINNER FOR THE CONFERMENT OF FELLOWSHIP, HOLDING ON THURSDAY FEBRUARY 24, 2017 AT THE NAF CONFERENCE CENTRE, ABUJA
I sincerely welcome you all on behalf of the Council, the Executive Committee and the entire membership of the Nigerian Society of Engineers to this Special Dinner. I commend the spirited effort made by all of you to join us here in the nation’s capital to witness this crucial event, being the first in the series for 2017.
As part of innovation, the Board of Fellows/College of Fellows have fashioned the Special Dinner to serve as an avenue for interaction between and amongst Engineers, as well as with other professionals. The underlying reason here is for the advancement of the Societys ideals as well as increasing visibility for our activities both in the public domain and for the attention of policy makers in the country.
Accordingly, our Special Dinner provides us the opportunity for the promotion of our service to nation and mankind, networking and more importantly the desired occasion for the conferment of Fellowship on deserving distinguished Engineers.
Ladies and gentlemen, today thirty (31) of such engineers of distinction will become Fellows of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. They are joining the league of elite professionals in delivering value services to the development of our beloved nation.
I want to particularly welcome our Conferees to the prestigious Fellowship of our Society. Your conferment is earned by dint of hard work and dedication.
However, I wish to rekindle here that, the expectations of NSE and the larger society from our Honourable Conferees are high, with regards to strict adherence to professional codes, standards and ethics. The NSE therefore, reserves the right to revoke and withdraw the Fellowship certificate of any member enmeshed in breaches brought to the notice of the Society. In this regard, the Board of Fellows has been mandated to put in place the framework, not only for the restructuring of the College of Fellows, but also for monitoring the adherence quotient of all Fellows to professional codes, standards and ethics.
This Conferment of Fellowship must not be seen as an end in itself but an opportunity to be of greater service to the Nigerian Society of Engineers; supporting its projects and programmes, and lending your voices and muscles to its quests to change the face of engineering practice. I therefore charge you to continue to prove yourselves as worthy ambassadors of NSE.
Majorly, interactive sessions for Fellows have been yielding the desired result. Fellows have continually made useful contributions at such fora and had always become active participants in strategic areas of development in the country. Top on the agenda has always been renewed commitment to the promotion of the engineering profession. Fellows have consistently agreed, with one voice, on the need for generous donations towards the completion of the NEC phase 2, amongst other issues.
Let me commend the Board of Fellows, ably led by Engr. Sir Chris Okoye, FNSE, which has painstakingly gone through the diligent process of selecting the calibre of Engineers to be conferred tonight. The Board has consistently put its best foot forward in bringing out the cream of our noble profession for recognition, as it has done again, this time. I salute every member of the Board.
Ladies and gentlemen, I want to use the opportunity of this gathering to reiterate the commitment of our Society to raise the bar for the engineering profession in the country.
At this conferment, The Board of Fellows has considered it necessary to centre our discourse on the necessity of not only empowering engineering teachers but to graphically point out the means of linking up with the industry. The link is essential for our economic progress as a nation.
The current Board of Fellows has accorded the Fellowship of the NSE the dignity and professionalism it deserves, by reviewing the guidelines/conditions for Fellowship approval to give more weight/scores to professional engineering accomplishments. These have led to more quality in the Fellows of the Society. The ultimate goal is to make the fellowship of the Society the envy of Engineers in the country, as well as the Society at large.
Once again, I congratulate our new Fellows, and welcome them to the league of Distinguished Fellows of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, while I wish them great successes in their respective endeavours.
Thank you all for coming.
Engr. Otis Anyaeji, FNSE, FAEng
